Madhya Pradesh is well known for having many dams that are built over rivers like Chambal, Narmada, Son, and Barna. These dams in Madhya Pradesh are not only seen as water reservoirs but tourist spots as well. Tourists visit these dams to enjoy their vacation. A large crowd gathers on these dams in the monsoon season. However, not all of them are worth visiting or open to tourists.

It may be difficult for you to understand which one you should visit. So, here is a list of top dams in MP.

Top 5 Dams of Madhya Pradesh

1. Bansagar Dam

This is one of the oldest dams of Madhya Pradesh and it is spread across the Son river. It has been established near the Deolond village in the Shahdol district. The river was formed for irrigation, power generation, and other facilities in Madhya Pradesh.

The dam was built as a multiple-purpose river valley project. Slowly, it started attracting people and turned into a tourist spot. The dam is a treat for nature lovers. Here, you will feel closer to nature.

2. Bargi Dam

Bargi Dam is among the first completed dams from the given chain of 39 dam series to be established in the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh. It has been constructed over one of the largest rivers which flow towards the West and fall into the Arabian Sea.

The total length of this dam is 1312 km and covers an area of 1072km. This dam water container is one of the best places for tourism with good competence like speed boating, water scooter, paddle boating, and bidding.

3. Indirasagar Dam

Indira Sagar Dam is a very unique and multipurpose dam. This beautiful dam has been built near the Narmada River which flows from central to the western parts of India. This dam forms a huge lake that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

4. Gandhi Sagar Dam

Gandhi Sagar Dam is amongst four major dams built near to Chambal River. The best part of this dam is its freemasonry gravity dam, standing 62.17 meters (204.0ft) high with a gross storage capability of 7.322 billion cubic meters from a catchment area of 22,584 km (8,720 sqm). It is one of the beautiful dams in Madhya Pradesh and it also attracts a large number of migratory waterbirds and non-migratory birds throughout the year.

There’s little wonder about why this dam has become a famous tourist attraction. Something special in the air, along with the aura of the place drags everyone here.

5. Tawa Dam

Located in the Hoshangabad district, Tawa Dam is built over the Tawa River. The dam is the biggest tourist attraction in the district, especially during monsoon months when Cruise Boat service is available. Apart from it, people also come to visit nearby areas like Satpura National Park and Bori Wildlife Sanctuary.

Apart from these 5 most famous dams, there are many other dams in Madhya Pradesh such as Omkareshwar Dam, Madikheda Dam, Bheemgarh Dam, Tiger Dam, and Govindgarh Dam. You can visit them to spend your vacations.
